How to compress image to 20 KB

  1. Choose your image

Drop a photo, scan or screenshot. You can add several at once.

  2. Set 20 KB as the limit

Pick a preset or type your own limit, and a minimum if the form has one.

  3. Set the dimensions if asked

Enter the exact pixels, centimetres or inches and the DPI that the instructions give.

  4. Download

Check the size shown next to each file, then download it, or all files as a zip.

What fits in 20 KB

Twenty kilobytes is small but enough for a clear face or a signature. In our tests a detailed photo came to about 12 KB at 200 x 250 pixels and 24 KB at 300 x 375 at good quality, so a photo around 250 to 300 pixels wide is the sweet spot. A signature on white paper fits easily at larger sizes.

If the image still looks soft, the problem is usually too many pixels for the size. Set the dimensions your form gives, or crop closer, rather than accepting a very low quality.

When the form also has a minimum

Some forms ask for a file between 10 and 20 KB. Type 10 in the minimum box. If your image is very small or plain, the tool raises the quality and, if needed, the dimensions until the file is above 10 KB. For signatures, see the signature resizer, which also cleans up the paper.

Questions

How do I reduce a photo to 20 KB on my phone?

Open this page in your phone browser, tap Choose images, pick the photo and download the result. It works on Android and iPhone, without an app.

Why does my 20 KB photo look blurry?

It has too many pixels for 20 KB, so the quality had to drop. Crop it closer, or set a smaller size such as 300 x 375 pixels, and it will look sharper at the same file size.

Is 20 KB 20,000 or 20,480 bytes?

Websites count a kilobyte as 1,000 or 1,024 bytes, so the tool aims under the limit in both. A file it marks as 20 KB passes a 20 KB limit either way.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The image is compressed by your browser on your device, and nothing is sent to uncrop.si or anyone else.
