Adobe and GIMP guide
How to uncrop an image in Photoshop, Lightroom and GIMP
In Photoshop it depends on Delete Cropped Pixels: if it was off and the file was kept as a PSD, the cut-off area is still there. Lightroom and Lightroom Classic never delete pixels, so you can reset a crop at any time, but exported copies are flat.
Professional editors can be very forgiving about crops, as long as the right setting was used and the right file was kept. Lightroom and Lightroom Classic never change the original photo, so a crop can always be reset. Photoshop and GIMP can keep the cropped area hidden inside a layered file. In every one of these apps, though, an exported JPEG or PNG contains only what was inside the crop.
Photoshop: check Delete Cropped Pixels first
Everything depends on one checkbox in the Crop tool’s Options bar. Adobe describes Delete Cropped Pixels as permanently removing the areas outside the crop when it is on, and keeping them editable when it is off (Adobe). For a non-destructive crop, Adobe says to make sure it is turned off (Adobe).
| Delete Cropped Pixels | File you have | Can you uncrop? |
|---|---|---|
| Off | PSD or another layered file | Yes, the hidden area is still in the file |
| Off | JPEG or PNG export | No, only the PSD has the hidden area |
| On | Document still open | Yes, with Undo or History |
| On | Saved and closed | No |
The hidden pixels survive only in a file that keeps layers, such as a PSD. Saving a JPEG flattens the image (Adobe Community).
If it was off: reveal the hidden area
- Open the PSD.
- Choose Image > Reveal All.
Alternatively, select the Crop tool and click the image. The cropped area shows again, and you can drag the crop handles outward.
Adobe’s own crop help does not describe these steps. They come from an Adobe community answer and a long-running tutorial (Adobe Community, Photoshop Essentials).
If it was on: Undo and History only
With Delete Cropped Pixels on, the pixels are removed from the document. You can still go back with Edit > Undo or by clicking an earlier state in the History panel, but history states and snapshots last only while the file is open (Adobe Community). Once the cropped file is saved and closed, look for the original file instead.
Generative Expand and Content-Aware Fill create new pixels
Photoshop 27.11, the September 2026 release (Adobe), offers two ways to fill a canvas you have enlarged:
- Generative Expand: select the Crop tool, drag the crop handles outward, select Generative Expand in the Contextual Task Bar, then select Generate. A prompt is optional. Pick a variation in the Properties panel (Adobe).
- Content-Aware Fill on crop: with Use Classic Mode turned off, select the Crop tool, choose Content-Aware Fill from the Fill menu in the Options bar, drag the handles past the edge and press Enter (Windows) or Return (Mac) (Adobe).
Both fill the new space with invented content. They can look convincing on skies, walls and textures, but they are not the scene that was outside the frame.
Lightroom
Lightroom is non-destructive, so a crop never changes the original photo.
- Reset everything: in Detail view, choose Photo > Reset To Original or press Shift+R. This removes all edits, not only the crop (Adobe).
- Compare earlier edits: open the Versions panel. Its Auto tab lists versions saved automatically from each editing session, and you can save your own on the Named tab (Adobe).
Lightroom also has Generative Expand (Adobe):
- Open the photo and select the Crop, Rotate, Geometry panel.
- Select Enable Expand and drag an edge outward.
- Under Method, choose Firefly Fill & Expand or Content-Aware Fill. Content-Aware Fill does not use generative credits.
- Select Generate, pick a variation, then select Keep.
As in Photoshop, the expanded border is generated content.
Lightroom Classic
Lightroom Classic is non-destructive too. You crop in the Develop module (Adobe), and you can undo a crop at any time:
- Reset the crop: press Ctrl+Alt+R on Windows or Command+Option+R on a Mac (Adobe).
- Step back: select an earlier state in the History panel, or a saved state in the Snapshots panel (Adobe).
- Start over: the Reset button returns the photo to the default settings, removing all edits (Adobe).
In both Lightroom apps, files you export are flat. A JPEG exported after cropping contains only the cropped area, so go back to the photo in your library or catalog instead.
GIMP 3.2
Since GIMP 2.10.20, the Crop tool resizes only the canvas by default and leaves the pixels outside it in the layer (GIMP). In GIMP 3.2, the Delete cropped pixels option is still unchecked by default (GIMP manual).
- Same session: use Edit > Undo or the Undo History dialog. Undo history is not saved in XCF files, so it is gone once you close the image (GIMP manual).
- Saved as XCF: choose Image > Fit Canvas to Layers to bring the cropped area back. To preview it first, use View > Show All (GIMP).
- Exported file: an exported image contains only what was inside the canvas, so keep the XCF if you might change the crop later.
When the crop cannot be undone
If you only have a flat export, or Delete Cropped Pixels was on:
- Look for the original: the camera file, the photo in your Lightroom library, an earlier PSD, or a backup.
- Ask whoever edited the image for the layered file.
- Check the image with our cropped photo checker in case an editor left an old EXIF thumbnail in it, as described in can you uncrop a photo?.
- Extend the image for free on the uncrop.si home page. It adds new canvas and fills it in your browser, which, like Generative Expand, creates new pixels rather than recovering the old ones. For generative fills with your own provider key, use AI uncrop.
Questions
Can you uncrop an image in Photoshop after saving?
Only if Delete Cropped Pixels was off and the file was saved as a PSD. Then choose Reveal All from the Image menu, or click the image with the Crop tool, to show the hidden area again. A JPEG keeps only the visible area.
Does the Photoshop History panel survive closing a file?
No. History and snapshots last only while the document is open. If a crop was made with Delete Cropped Pixels on and the file was saved and closed, those pixels are gone from that file.
How do you reset a crop in Lightroom Classic?
Press Ctrl+Alt+R on Windows or Command+Option+R on a Mac. You can also select an earlier state in the History panel or a saved snapshot.
Is Generative Expand the same as uncropping?
It extends the canvas and fills it with generated content. The result can look like an uncropped photo, but the new area is invented, not the original scene.
How do you uncrop in GIMP?
While the image is still open, use Undo in the Edit menu. If it was saved as an XCF file with the default canvas-only crop, choose Fit Canvas to Layers from the Image menu.
