A PRACTICAL GUIDE

Remove a simple image background without AI

A solid or nearly solid background can often be removed with colour selection. This method compares pixel colours; it does not recognise people, products or hair. A plain studio backdrop, a flat logo or a screenshot is a better starting point than a busy outdoor photograph.

Pick a background pixel

Open the free background colour remover, choose Pick a colour, and click on the backdrop. Connected-area mode starts from that pixel and follows matching neighbours. A matching colour enclosed inside the subject is kept if it is not connected to that region.

Adjust tolerance slowly

At zero tolerance, only an exact match is removed. Increase it gradually to include small lighting and compression variations. If part of the subject begins to disappear, undo the edit and lower tolerance. All matching colours mode is more aggressive because it also removes that colour from disconnected regions.

Keep the edge believable

Edge softness reduces abrupt changes near the selected colour range. It does not understand fine hair or recover an edge hidden by blur. Use Erase to remove remaining pieces and Restore to paint back from the original working image. Undo can reverse the last three background edits.

Export transparency

Choose PNG or WebP. JPG turns transparent areas white. The checkerboard visible in the workspace is only a preview of transparency. You can use a frame or a caption before downloading.

When colour removal is the wrong approach

A background that shares colours with the subject, complicated shadows or fine detail may require patient brushing. If you want a newly generated setting rather than a transparent cutout, the BYOK AI background tool sends an image and prompt to your chosen provider. Review its result because generative editing can change the subject.
