How to uncrop an image in Canva
Inside a Canva design, cropping only hides part of the image, so you can double-click it and drag the crop handles back out at any time. Downloaded files are flat, but the original upload is usually still in Projects, in the Uploads folder.
Inside Canva, yes. Canva’s help says “the hidden parts aren’t deleted; you can adjust the crop anytime” (Canva), so any image you cropped in a design can be uncropped in that same design. What you cannot uncrop is a file you downloaded from Canva, because the download contains only the visible part. For that, go back to the design or to the photo you originally uploaded.
Uncrop an image in a Canva design
- Open the design and select the image.
- On the editor toolbar, select Crop, or double-click the image.
- Drag any crop handle outward to show the hidden area. You can also resize the image inside the crop space to change what is visible.
- Select Done on the side panel, or click outside the image, to finish.
For an image inside a frame or a grid, double-click it (or double-tap it on a phone) to get to the crop (Canva).
On a phone or tablet
The Canva app uses the same idea with touch controls (Canva):
- Tap the image.
- On the editor toolbar at the bottom, tap Crop, or double-tap the image.
- Tap and drag any crop handle outward to show more of the image.
- Tap outside the image to finish.
Cropped or resized?
Canva treats these as two different things. Resizing changes the size of the whole image, so nothing is hidden and there is nothing to uncrop. Cropping hides part of the image while keeping it in the design (Canva). If an image looks cut off inside a design, it has usually been cropped or placed in a frame or grid that shows only part of it. Either way, double-click it to see and adjust what is hidden.
What you can and cannot uncrop
| What you have | Can you uncrop it? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| An image cropped inside a Canva design | Yes | Select Crop and drag the handles outward |
| The photo you uploaded to Canva | Usually still full size | Download it from Uploads |
| A PNG or JPG downloaded from Canva | No | Fix the crop in the design and download again |
| An image extended with Magic Expand | Not a recovery | The added area is generated by AI |
Download your original upload
Canva keeps the media files you upload, and you can download them again, so the full photo is usually still in your account (Canva).
From the Canva homepage:
- Select Projects, then All projects.
- Open the Uploads folder.
- Hover over the image, select More, then Download.
From inside the editor, open the Uploads tab in the side panel, select More on the image thumbnail and choose Download.
If you deleted an upload by mistake, check Canva’s Trash before giving up (Canva). If the photo was never uploaded as a separate file, for example because it came from a template or another person’s design, ask the designer for the original.
Shared designs keep the hidden parts too
Because cropped areas are hidden rather than deleted, anyone who can edit a design can drag a crop back out. If you cropped something private out of a photo, share a downloaded image instead of the editable design, or upload a version of the photo that was cropped before it went into Canva.
Magic Expand generates new content
Canva’s Magic Expand extends an image beyond its border with AI (Canva):
- Select the photo.
- On the editor toolbar, select Edit.
- Go to Tools, then See All, and select Magic Expand.
- Choose a size, or drag a crop handle beyond the border.
- Select Expand and wait for the image to be processed.
Canva presents this as a way to get back what is just outside the frame, but the new area is generated, not recovered. It is a guess based on the rest of the photo, so do not use it where accuracy matters, such as documents, evidence or product photos. Canva also notes that images with faces, hands or transparent backgrounds may not expand well.
When the crop cannot be undone
If you only have a downloaded image and no access to the design or the original upload:
- Ask the person who made the design for edit access or for the original photo.
- Search the phone, computer or cloud folder the photo was uploaded from, including any backups.
- Extend the image for free on the uncrop.si home page. It adds canvas around the picture and fills it in your browser, which creates new pixels rather than restoring the cropped ones. To fit a format such as a 9:16 story or a 4:5 post, use change aspect ratio, and for complex scenes try AI uncrop with your own provider key.
Questions
Does cropping in Canva delete part of the image?
No. Canva hides the cropped parts without deleting them, so you can adjust the crop at any time inside the design.
Can you uncrop a Canva image after downloading it?
Not the downloaded file, which contains only the visible area. Open the design in Canva and adjust the crop there, or download the original upload from Projects.
Is Magic Expand the same as uncropping?
No. Magic Expand generates new content beyond the border with AI. It can extend a scene, but it does not restore what was in the original photo.
Where does Canva keep uploaded images?
In Projects, under All projects, in the Uploads folder. Hover over a file, select More, then Download to save the original.
