How to make a passport size photo

  1. Pick the photo you need

Choose the country and document. The frame and guides change to its official size.

  2. Add a photo of your face

Taken straight on, in even light, against a plain light wall. A phone photo is fine.

  3. Line it up

Tap the top of the head and the chin. The tool sizes and centres the head, then you can fine tune.

  4. Download or print

Save the digital photo for an online form, or a 4 x 6 in or A4 sheet of copies to print.

How the guides work

The frame has the exact shape of the photo you picked. A red line marks where the top of the head should be, and a green band shows where the chin must land so the head is the size the rules allow. For a US visa photo a blue band also marks the eye line.

Choose Line it up for me, tap the top of the head and then the bottom of the chin, and the tool scales the photo so the head sits in the middle of the allowed range, centres it, and straightens a small tilt. Drag, scroll or pinch to fine tune. The keyboard works too: arrow keys move the photo, plus and minus zoom.

Print at home or at a photo shop

A 4 x 6 inch photo print holds 8 photos of 35 x 45 mm or 2 of the US 2 x 2 inch size, and an A4 sheet holds 30 or 15, with room to cut between them. Download the sheet as a JPG for a photo shop or kiosk, or as a PDF to print at home on photo paper. Print the PDF at 100 % or Actual size, not Fit to page, so every photo comes out at exactly the right size. Then cut along the thin grey lines.

Some countries set their own print rules. Australia, for example, only accepts dye-sublimation prints from a photo lab, not inkjet prints.

Taking a photo that passes

Stand in front of a plain, light wall with even light from the front, so there are no shadows on your face or behind you. Ask someone else to take the photo from about 1.5 metres away, the distance India’s passport guideline gives, with the camera at eye level.

Face the camera with a neutral expression, eyes open and mouth closed. Take glasses off: the US, Indian and Australian rules ask for no glasses. Hats and head coverings are only allowed for religious or medical reasons, and the face must stay fully visible.

Why there is no background remover for passports

Official passport and visa photos must not be edited. India’s passport guideline says photos should be unaltered by computer software, and the US does not accept photos changed with filters or editing apps. So for official formats the tool only crops and resizes, and the way to get a white background is a white wall or a white sheet behind you.

For everyday forms that just ask for a passport size photo, the general 35 x 45 mm option does offer brightness, contrast and a tool that whitens a plain wall.

Questions

Is this passport photo maker free?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no watermark, and you can make as many photos and print sheets as you like.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The photo is cropped and saved by your browser on your device. It is never sent to uncrop.si or anyone else.

What size is a passport size photo?

In most countries it is 35 x 45 mm (3.5 x 4.5 cm), including the UK, the Schengen countries, Australia and India. The US uses 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm) and China asks for 33 x 48 mm for visas. The table on this page lists each one with a link to the official rules.

How many passport photos fit on a 4x6 print?

Eight photos of 35 x 45 mm, two of the US 2 x 2 inch size, or four of the Chinese 33 x 48 mm size, each with space to cut around it.

How many passport photos fit on an A4 sheet?

Thirty photos of 35 x 45 mm, or fifteen of the US 2 x 2 inch size. You can also choose fewer copies.

Will my passport photo be accepted?

The tool gets the size and the head position right, which are the most common reasons photos are rejected. Officials also check things no tool can fix afterwards, such as even lighting, focus, a neutral expression and a plain background, so take the photo with care and read the official rules linked under the photo.

Can I take my passport photo with a phone?

Yes. Ask someone to take it from about 1.5 metres away at eye level, in even light against a plain light wall, then crop it here.

How do I print the photos at the right size?

Print the PDF at 100 % or Actual size, not Fit to page, so every photo comes out at exactly the right size. Then cut along the thin grey lines.
