2 x 2 inch photo, 600 x 600 pixels
A 2 x 2 inch photo is the square size used for US passports and visas and asked for by many other forms. Make one here, see it in pixels and centimetres, and print it at home or at a photo shop.
- 600 x 600 px at 300 DPI
- Head 1 to 1 3/8 in, guided
- 2 on 4 x 6 in, 15 on A4
What the file shows
The check reads the file on this device. It does not change, save or upload it, and the passport office still makes the final call.
- Top of head
- Chin inside this band
- Eyes inside this band
Brightness and background tools are off for official passport and visa photos, because passport offices reject edited photos. Retake the photo in even light against a plain light wall instead.

How to make a 2 x 2 inch photo
Pick the right 2 x 2 format
The general 2 x 2 inch photo is selected. For a US passport or visa, choose the US format instead, which switches editing off.
Add a straight-on photo
Shot in even light against a plain white or off-white wall, facing the camera.
Tap the top of the head, then the chin
The head lands between 1 and 1 3/8 inches tall, centred in the square.
Save it
Download a 600 x 600 pixel JPG, or a sheet: 2 on 4 x 6 in, 15 on A4, 20 on US Letter.
Which forms use 2 x 2 inches
The square 2 x 2 inch photo is the US standard: the State Department uses it for passports and visas, and India’s regular visa form also asks for a square photo with a head of 1 to 1 3/8 inches. The rules inside the square differ a little:
| Form | Head size | File for upload | Our page |
|---|---|---|---|
| US passport | 1 to 1 3/8 in (25 to 35 mm) | Online renewal: 54 KB to 10 MB | US passport photo |
| US visa (DS-160) | 50 to 69% of the height; eyes 56 to 69% up | 600 to 1200 px square, 240 KB or less | US visa photo |
| US immigrant visa (DS-260) | 1 to 1 3/8 in | None: 2 identical prints | US visa photo |
| Indian regular visa | 1 to 1 3/8 in | Square JPEG, 10 to 300 KB | Indian photo page |
The general 2 x 2 format on this page follows the US head size on a white or off-white background, and adds brightness, contrast and background lightening for forms that allow edits. For a US passport or visa, use the US formats, which leave the photo unedited because the State Department checks for digital changes.
Printing 2 x 2 photos at home
For a US passport, the State Department accepts prints on matte or glossy photo-quality paper, as long as the photo is sharp, not grainy, and shows no printer dots. Photocopies and scanned photos are not accepted, and neither are prints with holes, creases or smudges.
Choose Sheet as PDF, print it on photo paper at Actual size with Fit to page turned off and the printer at its best photo quality, then measure: each photo must be exactly 2 inches, or 51 mm, on each side. A 4 x 6 inch print holds two photos with room to cut, A4 holds 15 and US Letter 20.
Taking a 2 x 2 photo with a phone
A phone camera is fine if someone else holds it. Have them hold the camera several feet away, about 1.2 metres as the State Department suggests, at eye level, and stand a few feet in front of the wall so no shadow falls behind you. A camera too close distorts the face, and one far away leaves few pixels on it. Turn off portrait mode and beauty filters, and switch the flash off or down to avoid red eye.
Then open this page in the phone’s browser, add the photo from your gallery, tap the top of the head and the chin, and save the file or the sheet. Nothing is uploaded, so it works the same on iPhone and Android.

2x2 photo questions
How many pixels is a 2x2 photo?
600 x 600 pixels at 300 DPI, the usual print resolution, or 1200 x 1200 at 600 DPI. The DS-160 visa form accepts anything from 600 x 600 to 1200 x 1200.
What is a 2x2 photo in cm?
5.08 x 5.08 cm. The State Department rounds it to 51 x 51 mm.
How do I make a 2x2 photo for free?
Keep the general 2 x 2 inch format, add a straight-on photo shot against a plain white or off-white wall, and mark the top of the head and the chin. Save the 600 x 600 file or a print sheet; there is no login, watermark or upload. For a US passport or visa, use the US format instead.
Can I print 2x2 photos at home?
Yes. For a US passport, print on matte or glossy photo-quality paper, sharp and with no visible printer dots. Print at Actual size and check that one photo measures 2 inches.
How many 2x2 photos fit on a 4x6?
Two, with space around each to cut. A4 fits 15 and US Letter 20.
Is a 2x2 photo the same as passport size?
In the US, yes. In the UK, India and much of Europe, passport size means 35 x 45 mm, which is narrower and taller. See the 35 x 45 mm photo page.
Can I make a 2x2 photo on my phone?
Yes. Open this page in your phone’s browser on iPhone or Android, add the photo from your gallery, line it up and save the file or a sheet to print.
Is my 2x2 photo uploaded?
No. The crop and the print sheet are made by your browser, on your device.
