How to make a UK passport photo

  1. Pick the photo you need

Choose the country and document. The frame and guides change to its official size.

  2. Add a photo of your face

Taken straight on, in even light, against a plain light wall. A phone photo is fine.

  3. Line it up

Tap the top of the head and the chin. The tool sizes and centres the head, then you can fine tune.

  4. Download or print

Save the digital photo for an online form, or a 4 x 6 in or A4 sheet of copies to print.

The UK photo rules in short

Printed photos are 45 mm high and 35 mm wide, with the head 29 to 34 mm from the chin to the crown, on a plain cream or light grey background. Paper applications need two identical prints, and the photo must have been taken in the last month.

For online applications the photo must be at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall and between 50 KB and 10 MB, against any plain, light-coloured background. The tool saves 700 x 900 pixels. Do not wear glasses unless you have to.

How the guides work

The frame has the exact shape of the photo you picked. A red line marks where the top of the head should be, and a green band shows where the chin must land so the head is the size the rules allow. For a US visa photo a blue band also marks the eye line.

Choose Line it up for me, tap the top of the head and then the bottom of the chin, and the tool scales the photo so the head sits in the middle of the allowed range, centres it, and straightens a small tilt. Drag, scroll or pinch to fine tune. The keyboard works too: arrow keys move the photo, plus and minus zoom.

Taking a photo that passes

Stand in front of a plain, light wall with even light from the front, so there are no shadows on your face or behind you. Ask someone else to take the photo from about 1.5 metres away, the distance India’s passport guideline gives, with the camera at eye level.

Face the camera with a neutral expression, eyes open and mouth closed. Take glasses off: the US, Indian and Australian rules ask for no glasses. Hats and head coverings are only allowed for religious or medical reasons, and the face must stay fully visible.

45 mm high and 35 mm wide, with the head 29 to 34 mm from the chin to the crown.

What size is a digital UK passport photo?

At least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall, and between 50 KB and 10 MB. The tool saves a 700 x 900 pixel JPG.

What background does a UK passport photo need?

Cream or light grey for printed photos. For online applications, any plain, light colour.

Can I wear glasses in a UK passport photo?

Only if you have to. If you do, make sure there is no glare and the frames do not cover your eyes.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The photo is cropped and saved by your browser on your device. It is never sent to uncrop.si or anyone else.

Will my photo be accepted?

The tool gets the size and the head position right, which are the most common reasons photos are rejected. Officials also check things no tool can fix afterwards, such as even lighting, focus, a neutral expression and a plain background, so take the photo with care and read the official rules linked under the photo.
