How to make a 35 x 45 mm photo

  1. Keep the general format

Passport size photo, 35 x 45 mm, is selected. If your form names a country, pick it instead: the head size differs.

  2. Add a straight-on photo

Even light, a plain light wall, eyes level with the camera. The photo stays in your browser.

  3. Tap crown and chin

We size the face to 70 to 80% of the photo, 31.5 to 36 mm on a 45 mm photo, and centre it.

  4. Download or print

    A 413 x 531 pixel JPG at 300 DPI, or a 4 x 6 inch or A4 sheet of copies.

Why the pixel size depends on DPI

Millimetres describe a print and pixels describe a file, so the two only meet through the print resolution. At 300 dots per inch, the usual setting for photo prints, 35 x 45 mm is 413 x 531 pixels; at 600 DPI it is 827 x 1063. Our download is 413 x 531 pixels with 300 DPI stored in the file, so a shop that follows the file prints it at exactly 35 x 45 mm.

When an online form asks for 35 x 45 mm but names no pixel size, any file with the same 7 by 9 shape prints at that size, and more pixels only make a sharper print. The 630 x 810 pixels Passport Seva asks for, and the 700 x 900 file we make for checking UK photos, have that same shape.

For a photo you already have, change image DPI shows the DPI stored in the file and sets a new one without touching the pixels.

Who uses 35 x 45 mm, and how big the head is

The frame is the same in many places, but the head inside it is not. That is why the format list has a separate entry for each country:

Head size inside a 35 x 45 mm photo by document

Australia’s passport office recommends a professional passport photo provider and does not recommend online passport photo services or apps, so we list its rules for comparison but do not offer it as a format.

Printing 35 x 45 mm photos

One 4 x 6 inch photo print holds 8 of them in two rows of four, A4 holds 30 in six rows of five, and US Letter 28. Each photo gets a thin grey cutting line just outside its edge, and the sheet keeps 3 mm clear at the edges.

Print the PDF at Actual size or 100 %, not Fit to page, then measure one photo before cutting the rest: it should be 45 mm tall and 35 mm wide. Labs that sell 10 x 15 cm prints instead of 4 x 6 inches may shrink the image a little to fit, so ask for 4 x 6 or check with a ruler.

Exam and everyday forms

Exam, admission and ID card forms often say passport size and mean 35 x 45 mm, sometimes with a file size limit as well. For these the general format lets you adjust brightness and contrast and lighten a plain wall, which the official passport formats switch off.

If the form sets a limit in KB, bring the downloaded photo down with the 50 KB compressor or the 20 KB compressor, which can also set exact pixels when a form names them.
