Transparent PNG, free, no upload

Remove the background from your signature

Drop a photo or scan of your signature. The paper turns transparent, or clean white, and the ink stays crisp, in your pen’s color, black or blue. Download a PNG for Word, Google Docs or a PDF, or send it on to fit a form’s KB limit. Your signature never leaves your device.

How to remove the background from a signature

  1. Sign on plain paper

Use a black or dark blue pen on plain white paper. Scan it, or photograph it in daylight with the phone held flat above it.

  2. Drop the photo

The paper clears by itself. If the photo shows other writing, choose the signature area.

  3. Pick the look

Transparent or white, your pen’s color, black or blue, and how much space to leave around it.

  4. Save or send it on

Download a PNG or JPG, or open it in the signature resizer or the photo and signature joiner.

Made for signatures, not just plain backgrounds

There is no color to pick. The tool compares every pixel with the paper around it, so a sheet that is bright on one side and gray on the other clears in one go. The paper inside loops clears too, because each pixel is judged on its own rather than flooded in from the edge. Stroke edges become partly see-through ink of one color, so there is no pale fringe when the signature sits on a dark slide.

With a blue or other colored pen, the tool also looks at the pen’s own hue, so the faint parts of a ballpoint line stay while gray creases and paper grain go. A table around the sheet is cleared the same way as in our photo and signature joiner, and the result is trimmed to the strokes, keeping every name, initial and underline. For logos, products and other one-color backdrops, use the background color remover instead, which lets you pick the color and brush by hand.

Get a clean result from a phone photo

Use plain white paper, a dark pen and daylight from a window, with no flash, and hold the phone flat and close. Soft, even shade clears. A hard shadow is usually cleared too, but check the Dark preview, which shows any leftover paper at once.

Ruled paper is harder. In our tests on generated images of ruled paper, light blue lines cleared at Normal under a black signature. Under a blue one, the lines touching the signature stayed, faintly, at Normal and cleared at Strong. Lines nearly as dark as the pen, printed text and form boxes stay, because the tool tells ink from paper by darkness and color, not by shape. Choose the signature area to leave out what sits around it, or sign again on plain paper. For pencil, pick Gentle. Cream paper on a white desk can leave some of the desk in.

Transparent PNG or white JPG?

PNG keeps transparency. JPG has no alpha channel, as the MDN image format guide notes, so the JPG option here always comes on white. For documents and slides, take the PNG. Upload forms usually want a JPG on white under a KB limit: press Resize to a KB limit under the result, or use the KB compressor.

PAN card forms are a common case, and Protean’s own pages differ. Its guideline for DSC-based applications lists a color JPEG at 200 DPI, 2 x 4.5 cm, of at most 10 KB. Its article on scanned applications says at most 50 KB and asks for a black pen on plain white paper. A file under 10 KB passes both, and the PAN form button under the result sets that, at 4.5 cm wide by 2 cm tall, which is how we read the guideline for a signature. Check the form before you upload. The photo has its own rules: the passport photo maker sizes it.

Put your signature in Word, Google Docs or a PDF

Word: choose Insert, Pictures, This Device and pick the PNG. Then open Layout Options and choose In Front of Text, which Microsoft says puts the picture on top of the text. Drag it onto the line and resize it from a corner. Word’s own Set Transparent Color makes only one color clear, and Microsoft warns that an area that looks like one color can hold many subtle shades, which is why a photo of paper often comes out patchy. It is not in Word for the web. Remove Background, in the Windows and Mac apps, marks the background in magenta for you to refine.

Google Docs: choose Insert, Image, Upload from computer, click the image and choose In front of text. Those layout options are not available in pageless format.

A PDF in Acrobat on the web: choose E-Sign, then Fill & Sign, then Add signature, then Image, and pick the file you downloaded here. Adobe says the signed agreement is saved to Adobe cloud storage.

On an iPhone: the downloaded file is in the Files app, under Browse and then Downloads.

Keep your signature image safe

Anyone who has the file can paste it. Send signed documents as a PDF rather than the PNG, keep the PNG off shared drives and public pages, and delete copies you no longer need. This page never uploads it: the cleaning runs in your browser.

Whether an image counts as a signature depends on the document and who receives it. In the US, the ESIGN Act counts a symbol attached to a record and adopted with the intent to sign as an electronic signature, but it does not require anyone to accept electronic signatures. An image is not a certificate-based digital signature, which some forms ask for.

Questions

How do I make my signature transparent?

Sign on plain white paper with a dark pen, take a photo or scan, and drop it here. The paper turns transparent and the ink stays, trimmed to the strokes. Keep Transparent and download the PNG. JPG cannot store transparency, so the JPG option always comes on white.

Is it safe to remove a signature background online here?

Your signature stays on your device: your browser does all the work, with no AI service and no upload, and the line under the download shows what this page sent while you used it. There is no sign-up or watermark.

How do I add a transparent signature to a Word document?

Choose Insert, Pictures, This Device and pick the PNG. Select it, open Layout Options and choose In Front of Text, which Microsoft describes as putting the picture on top of the text. Drag it onto the signature line and resize it from a corner.

Why does my signature still have a white background?

Usually it was saved as a JPG on the way, and JPG has no transparency, so apps fill it with white. Insert the PNG you downloaded here, not a copy another app saved again. A white page behind it also looks the same, so test it on a colored shape.

Can I change my signature color to blue or black?

Yes. Pick Black, Blue or any color, or keep Pen color, which we estimate from the darkest parts of your strokes. Every stroke gets that one color with its soft edges kept, so the ink looks even. It cannot bring back shading the photo lost.

How do I remove lines from a signature on lined paper?

Try Strong. In our tests, faint ruled lines much lighter than the ink cleared at Strong while the signature stayed. Lines nearly as dark as your pen and printed text stay, because the tool tells ink from paper by darkness and color, not by shape. Choose the signature area to leave out lines around it, or sign again on plain white paper.

What signature size does a PAN card application need?

Protean gives two figures: its guideline for DSC-based applications lists a color JPEG at 200 DPI, 2 x 4.5 cm, of at most 10 KB, and its article on scan-based e-Sign applications says at most 50 KB. A file under 10 KB passes both. Clean your signature here, then press PAN form. Check the form itself before you upload.

Is a signature image legally valid?

It depends on the document and who receives it. In the US, the ESIGN Act counts a symbol attached to a record and adopted with the intent to sign as an electronic signature, but it does not make anyone accept one. An image is not a certificate-based digital signature, which some forms require: Protean’s DSC route for PAN needs a class II or III DSC.
