Make an image black and white
Focus on shape, light and texture. Create a grayscale photo, then refine its brightness and contrast.

Grayscale photo is selected. Turn it off to compare the original colours, or use Reset edits.
Choose your crop
Drag on the preview for a custom crop. The shaded edges will be removed.
Set the pixel dimensions
Dimensions are shared with the download controls below.
Presets set the longest edge. Unlocking the ratio can stretch the image.

With Text selected, drag on the picture to position your caption.
Give it an edge
Frames are drawn inside the output size. PNG or WebP keeps any transparent corners.
Remove a background colour
Best for plain backdrops. Connected removal starts at the picked pixel, or image corners. Use the brush for other areas.

Choose the file that fits
Use JPG or WebP quality to reduce file size. PNG is lossless. The actual file size appears after you download.
A conversion does not recover detail already lost from the source. Transparent pixels become white in JPG.

How to make an image black and white.
- Open a photo; the grayscale preview is already selected.
- Adjust brightness and contrast if the tones need refinement.
- Download your black-and-white JPG, PNG or WebP.
Colour out. Tonal detail in.
Grayscale removes colour from a photograph while keeping a range of gray tones. It can draw attention to light, texture and composition when colour is distracting. This page opens with Grayscale photo selected, so the preview and the downloaded image use the same monochrome setting.
A grayscale image is different from a two-colour black-and-white mask. Gray pixels retain intermediate tones rather than becoming only pure black or pure white. Use brightness and contrast gently to preserve detail in faces, clouds and dark surfaces.
You can switch grayscale off to compare the original colours before saving. A text overlay or frame added in this editor can stay coloured because those layers are drawn after the photo filter. The conversion happens in the browser and produces a new file, leaving the original colour image available.
A FEW USEFUL DETAILS
Before you download.
Is this a two-colour threshold tool? +
No. It creates a grayscale photograph with intermediate gray tones. It does not turn every pixel into only black or only white.
Can I restore colour after downloading? +
A grayscale download does not contain the removed colour information. Keep the original colour file, or turn grayscale off while the editor is still open.
Can the caption remain coloured? +
Yes. Text and frame colours are applied separately after the grayscale photo is rendered.
