How to split an image into equal parts
Open the photo
Drop it on the box or choose it. Big photos are fine: the pieces keep every original pixel. If a browser cannot hold a very large photo in memory, the tool says so and shows the size it used.
Set columns and rows
Three columns and one row gives three side-by-side strips. Two by two gives four quarters. The preview numbers each piece.
Split and save
Pick JPG or PNG, press Split image, then save the ZIP or tap any piece to save it by itself.
Three ways to split a photo
Pick the mode that matches where the pieces are going. The two Instagram modes resize your photo to the 1080 px width Instagram shows; equal parts are cut from the photo at its full size.
| Mode | Piece size | File order | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Equal parts | Your photo divided by the columns and rows, no resizing | Left to right, then top to bottom | Printing big, puzzles, worksheets, a tall screenshot in pieces |
| Carousel | 1080 x 1350, 1080 x 1440 or 1080 x 1080 px | Slide 1 is the left end | A panorama people swipe through in one post |
| Profile grid | Three posts per row, 1080 px wide | Post 1 goes up first and lands bottom right | One big picture across your Instagram profile |
Each Instagram mode has its own page with sizes and posting tips: the Instagram carousel splitter and the Instagram grid maker.
How big each piece is
Equal parts keep the pixels your photo already has, so pieces get smaller as the grid grows. Here is what a typical 12 megapixel phone photo (4000 x 3000 px) turns into, and how large each piece prints at 300 DPI, a common setting for sharp prints.
| Split (columns x rows) | Pieces | Each piece | Printed at 300 DPI |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 x 1, halves | 2 | 2000 x 3000 px | 16.9 x 25.4 cm |
| 3 x 1, thirds | 3 | 1333 x 3000 px | 11.3 x 25.4 cm |
| 2 x 2, quarters | 4 | 2000 x 1500 px | 16.9 x 12.7 cm |
| 3 x 3 | 9 | 1333 x 1000 px | 11.3 x 8.5 cm |
| 4 x 4 | 16 | 1000 x 750 px | 8.5 x 6.3 cm |
When the width or height does not divide evenly, some pieces are 1 px larger than the rest, so nothing is lost or stretched.
Print one image across several sheets
For a poster made from home printer pages, set the columns and rows to the number of sheets across and down, and save as PNG so no detail is lost to compression.
The pieces keep your photo's shape, so they fill the paper only when the photo has the shape of the whole sheet layout. Two by two A4 portrait sheets make a poster of 1:1.41, the same shape as one sheet. If your photo has another shape, trim it close to 1:1.41 first with Crop image; otherwise each sheet just gets a wider white strip to cut off.
An A4 sheet at 300 DPI is 2480 x 3508 pixels, so a poster of 2 x 2 A4 sheets needs a photo of about 4960 x 7016 pixels to stay fully sharp. A smaller photo still works; it just prints softer.
Put the pieces into one file with PNG to PDF on A4 with no margin. If your printer cannot print right to the edge of the paper, choose Fit to page (or fit to printable area) in the print dialog: every sheet shrinks by the same small amount and nothing is lost under the unprinted border. Then trim the white edges and tape the sheets together; the seams still line up.
What happens to your photo
This page opens, cuts and saves the photo inside your browser. It is not uploaded, the ZIP is built on your device, and the texture fill used by the Instagram modes runs in a background worker on your device too. Close the tab and nothing is kept.
Questions
How do I split an image into equal parts?
Open it here, choose Equal parts and set the columns and rows. Three columns and one row gives three equal strips side by side; one column and three rows stacks them. Press Split image and save the ZIP.
How do I split an image into 3 for Instagram?
Use Carousel with 3 slides if the three pieces go in one swipeable post, or Profile grid with 3 x 1 if they should sit as one row on your profile. Both give exact 1080 px wide files that Instagram does not need to crop.
How do I split a picture into 4 or 9 equal parts?
Two columns and two rows gives four quarters. Three columns and three rows gives nine pieces, the classic 3 x 3 look. For Instagram, use the Profile grid mode so every piece gets the 3:4 tile size.
Can I split an image in half?
Yes. Two columns and one row cuts it down the middle into a left and a right half. One column and two rows gives a top and a bottom half.
Does splitting reduce the quality?
Equal parts copy your pixels without resizing, as long as your browser can open the photo at full size (the tool tells you if it cannot). JPG pieces are saved at high quality (92 out of 100); choose PNG for a lossless copy, which is a larger file. The Instagram modes resize to 1080 px wide, the width Instagram shows.
How do I split a big image to print on several pages?
Set the columns and rows to the sheets across and down, save as PNG, then combine the pieces with PNG to PDF and print with Fit to page, so a printer that cannot reach the paper edge does not cut off part of any piece. Trim the white edges and tape. The section above lists the pixels an A4 sheet needs.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. Opening, cutting and zipping happen in this browser tab, and the texture fill runs in a background worker on your device. The photo is never sent anywhere.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, in current mobile browsers. Where the browser supports it, the Share button hands the pieces to your phone's share sheet, up to 10 at a time, where you can save them to your photos. For a big set, save the ZIP or tap the pieces one by one. If a single piece is too big for the browser to draw, the tool says so and asks for another column or row.
