Convert a JPG into PNG when you need that file format for a graphics workflow. PNG export does not add another lossy JPG encoding step, but it cannot undo compression already present in the source image.
A JPG starts with an opaque background. Choosing PNG does not automatically remove that background. If you need a transparent cutout, use colour-based background removal or the manual erase brush before exporting.
PNG may produce a much larger file for a photograph. Its lossless encoding has no quality slider in this editor. If size matters more than a PNG requirement, compare JPG and WebP output with the original dimensions before deciding.

Does PNG improve the original photo quality? +
No. It stores the current pixels without a new lossy encoding step, but cannot restore information lost in the original JPG.
Will this make the background transparent? +
No. Format conversion alone does not remove an opaque background. Use the background remover first if a cutout is needed.
Why is the quality slider disabled? +
PNG uses lossless canvas export here. The JPG/WebP quality setting does not affect it.
