How to uncrop a photo on Android

Updated · 4 min read

Short answer

In Google Photos, open the photo, tap Edit, then Revert. In Samsung Gallery, tap Edit, Revert, then Revert to original and Save. If the edit was saved as a copy, the untouched original is still in your library.

Yes, in most cases. Google Photos and Samsung Gallery both keep the original when you save a crop, so you can revert it later. If you saved the edit as a separate copy, there is nothing to undo: the original is still in your library next to it. The cut-off part is only lost in files that left the app, such as a cropped photo you shared, downloaded or received in a chat.

Save or Save as copy: why it matters

Both apps offer two ways to save an edit, and they behave differently.

Google Photos Samsung Gallery
Save Writes the edit to the original, which you can revert later Saves the edit; Revert to original undoes it on selected models
Save as copy Makes a new photo and leaves the original unchanged; the copy cannot be reverted Keeps the original and saves the edit as a new picture
Deleted items Collections > Trash, kept for 30 days Menu > Recycle bin, kept for 30 days

Google notes that Save may not be available for certain edits (Google). On Samsung, Save as copy is under More options (Samsung).

Undo a crop in Google Photos on Android or iPhone

  1. Open the Google Photos app and the photo you cropped.
  2. Tap Edit.
  3. Tap Revert.

The steps are the same on Android and on iPhone (Google, Google). If you edited with Save as copy, the copy cannot be reverted, but the original sits next to it in your photos (Google). Open the original and you have the full frame.

Undo a crop on photos.google.com

On a computer, the same revert works in the browser (Google):

  1. Go to photos.google.com.
  2. Open the photo with the edits you want to remove.
  3. Click Edit.
  4. Click Revert, then Save.

Samsung’s revert is available on selected models and software versions (Samsung).

  1. Open Gallery and select the photo.
  2. Tap Edit (the pencil icon).
  3. Tap Revert, then Revert to original.
  4. Tap Save.

The original then appears in the same location in Gallery (Samsung). To avoid the problem next time, tap More options (the three vertical dots) before saving and choose Save as copy, which keeps the original picture (Samsung).

Get back a deleted original

If you deleted the original after saving an edited copy, it may still be in the trash.

Google Photos

Deleted photos and videos stay in Collections > Trash for 30 days. Once they are permanently deleted, they cannot be restored (Google).

Deleted items stay in the Recycle bin for 30 days (Samsung).

  1. Open Gallery and tap Menu (the three horizontal lines).
  2. Select Recycle bin, then Edit.
  3. Select the photos you want to keep and tap Restore.

Auto frame and Generative edit add AI pixels

Both apps can make a tightly cropped photo look wider, but they do it by generating new content, not by recovering the old.

  • Google Photos Auto frame is under Edit > Crop > Auto frame. Google says it uses AI to fill in parts of a picture or expand it as needed (Google).
  • Samsung Generative edit (Galaxy AI) lets you zoom out beyond the image borders, and the empty space is filled automatically. You start it from the Generative edit icon in the Gallery editor, tap Generate, then Done, and the result is saved as a copy. Images made this way carry an AI watermark in the bottom-left corner, and you need to be signed in to a Samsung account (Samsung).

These tools are useful for framing, but the added areas are invented. They will not show what was really outside the frame.

Photos cropped in WhatsApp

WhatsApp has its own editor for cropping a photo before you send it. Until you send, tapping Cancel undoes all your changes and returns the photo to its original size and rotation (WhatsApp). After sending, the cropped version is the one the other person receives, and nothing on their side can bring the rest back. If you need the full frame of a photo someone cropped and sent, ask them to send it again without cropping, either in HD quality (WhatsApp) or as a Document of up to 2 GB (WhatsApp).

When the crop cannot be undone

A photo that was cropped and then shared, downloaded or sent through a chat app is flat: the copy holds only the visible area. Try these steps:

  1. Look for the original in Google Photos, Samsung Gallery and their trash folders.
  2. Check other phones, tablets or accounts the photo may have been backed up to.
  3. Ask the sender for the original, uncropped file, sent as a document if the chat app offers that option.
  4. Check the file with our cropped photo checker for leftover data. Pixel screenshots edited in Markup before the March 2023 security patch are a known case, explained in the screenshot guide.
  5. Extend the picture with the free tool on the uncrop.si home page. It adds new canvas and fills it in your browser, which creates new pixels; it cannot restore the cropped ones. For a set shape such as 9:16 or a square, use change aspect ratio.

Questions

Can you uncrop a photo in Google Photos after saving?

Yes, if you used Save. Open the photo, tap Edit, then Revert. If you used Save as copy, the copy cannot be reverted, but the original is still in your library.

Where is Revert to original on a Samsung phone?

Open the photo in Gallery, tap the Edit icon (the pencil), tap Revert, then Revert to original, and tap Save. Samsung says this works on selected models and software versions.

Does Auto frame or Generative edit restore the cropped part?

No. Both use AI to fill new areas around the photo. Samsung saves Generative edit results as a copy with an AI watermark.

How long are deleted photos kept?

Google Photos keeps deleted items in the trash for 30 days, and the Samsung Gallery Recycle bin also keeps them for 30 days. After that they are permanently deleted.
