Do QR codes expire? Static vs dynamic QR codes

Updated · 4 min read

Short answer

A QR code itself never expires: it is a printed pattern, and the pattern does not change. A static code keeps working for as long as its link or text is still useful. A dynamic code holds a short link on a company's server, and it stops working if that company switches the link off, for example when a free trial or a paid plan ends.

People search for “QR code generator no expiration” for a reason: printed codes on menus, packaging and business cards sometimes stop working months later. The pattern on the paper has not changed. What changed is something the code depended on. This guide explains the two kinds of QR code, why one kind can be switched off, and how to make codes that keep working.

What a QR code actually holds

A QR code is a grid of dark and light squares that encodes data: digits, text or raw bytes. The format is an open standard, ISO/IEC 18004, and DENSO WAVE, the company that invented it, lets anyone use it free of charge as long as they follow the standard. A phone that reads the code gets back exactly the data that was put in, such as https://example.com/menu, and then decides what to do with it.

There is no date, counter or license inside a QR code. Nothing in the standard makes a code stop working. So when a code “expires”, the cause is always outside the pattern.

Static QR codes

In a static code, the data is the final content: your web address, your Wi-Fi network, your contact card, your text. The phone acts on it directly. Static codes:

  • keep working for as long as the content is valid, with no account or renewal;
  • send scans straight to your link, so no company sees or counts them;
  • cannot be changed after printing, because the content is the pattern.

Every code made with the uncrop.si QR code generator is static.

Dynamic QR codes, and why they stop

A dynamic code holds a short link on a QR service’s server, something like qr-service.example/Ab3x9. When someone scans it, the server looks up where that short link should go today and forwards the visitor there. That gives two real benefits: the destination can be changed after printing, and the service can count scans.

The cost is a permanent dependency. If the service switches the short link off, every printed copy stops working at once. The help centers of three popular dynamic QR services describe what happens:

Service What its help center says happens
QR Code Generator (by Bitly), free trial ends Dynamic codes are deactivated and point to a service page instead of your destination. Static codes keep working.
QR Tiger, paid plan ends or is cancelled All dynamic codes become invalid.
Hovercode, subscription cancelled The account drops to the free plan; the first 3 dynamic codes stay active and the rest become inactive until you subscribe again.

None of this is hidden, but it is easy to miss when a “free” generator makes dynamic codes by default and the code looks like any other.

How to tell which kind you have

You do not need to trust the label. Read the code without opening it, for example with our QR code scanner for images, which shows the full text and never opens links:

  1. If the code holds your own address, such as your shop’s website, it is static.
  2. If it holds a short link on a QR or link-shortening service, it is dynamic, and it depends on that service.
  3. If it holds Wi-Fi details, a contact card or plain text, it is static: those cannot be redirected.

Our scanner flags short links and QR redirect services for the same reason: you cannot see where they go, and the owner can change it.

Other reasons a QR code stops working

Even a static code can fail if what it points to goes away, or if the print is poor:

  • The page is gone. A deleted page, a redesigned site with new addresses, or an expired domain name breaks every code that pointed there.
  • The print is damaged or too small. QR codes can repair some damage, about 7% to 30% depending on the error correction level, but not a faded, scratched or tiny print.
  • No quiet zone. A code needs a blank margin of 4 modules around it. Text or artwork pressed against the edge can stop scanners finding it.
  • Poor contrast. Light codes on dark backgrounds, or pale colors, are not read by every phone.

How to make a QR code that lasts

  1. Make a static code, so no account sits between the code and its content.
  2. Point it at a page on a domain you control, such as example.com/menu, rather than a file-sharing link or a third-party profile.
  3. If the destination may change, keep the address the same and change the page behind it. You get the flexibility of a dynamic code without the dependency.
  4. Keep your domain registration renewed for as long as the codes are in circulation.
  5. Print it large enough, with error correction M or higher and its quiet zone, and test it with more than one phone.

Make a QR code that never expires

The free uncrop.si QR code generator makes static codes for links, Wi-Fi, contacts and events, checks that each one scans, and never routes scans through us.

Questions

Do free QR codes expire?

A free static code does not, because nothing sits between the code and its content. Free codes from services that make dynamic codes can stop working when a trial ends, so check which kind you made.

How long does a QR code last?

The code lasts as long as the print does. What it points to decides whether it is still useful: a static link keeps working until the web page is removed or the domain lapses.

Can a static QR code be changed after printing?

No. The content is in the pattern itself. Point the code at a page on your own website if you think the destination may change, and update that page instead.

How can I tell whether a QR code is static or dynamic?

Read the code without opening it, for example with the uncrop.si QR code scanner. If it holds your own address or text, it is static. If it holds a short link on a QR or link-shortening service, it is dynamic.

Do QR codes from Canva or Adobe Express expire?

It depends on what the code holds. A code that contains your own link directly is static and keeps working. Scan it without opening it to see whether it holds your link or a short link on another service.

Are dynamic QR codes ever worth it?

Yes, when you need to change the destination after printing, or want scan counts from the service. Pay for them knowingly, and keep the account active for as long as the codes are in use.
