vCard QR code: save my contact in one scan
Add the details you want to share and print the code on a business card, badge or flyer. A phone reads the contact card and offers to save it, with no app and no profile page that can lapse.
- Saves straight to Contacts
- vCard 3.0, works offline
- No profile page to expire

How to make a vCard QR code
Type your details
Name, phone, email and website are the usual set. Only add what you are happy for anyone holding the card to keep.
Keep it short
Each field makes the code denser. An address and a note can double its size, so leave them out of small cards.
Check what is inside
Open "Text inside the code" under the preview to see the exact card a phone will read, line by line.
Print it large enough
At least 2.5 cm wide on a business card, more if you added an address. The stats line shows the module size.
A contact card in the code, or a link to a profile
There are two ways to put contact details behind a QR code. A vCard code, which this page makes, carries the card itself. A "digital business card" code carries a link to a profile page hosted by a service. Each has its place:
| Question | vCard in the code | Link to a profile page |
|---|---|---|
| Works without mobile data | Yes | No |
| Can be changed after printing | No, print a new code | Yes, edit the page |
| Keeps working if a subscription ends | Yes, forever | Only while the page is online |
| Size of the code | Larger, grows with each field | Small, just a link |
If your details change often, you can also do both: a vCard code on the card and your website address printed as text.
How dense the code gets
Every line of the card adds bytes, and more bytes mean a higher QR version with smaller modules. We measured our sample contact at error correction M, with the 4 module quiet zone included:
| Fields | Bytes | QR version | Module at 2.5 cm | Module at 3 cm |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Name and mobile | 97 | 6 (41 x 41) | 0.51 mm | 0.61 mm |
| + email and website | 160 | 9 (53 x 53) | 0.41 mm | 0.49 mm |
| + company and job title | 196 | 10 (57 x 57) | 0.38 mm | 0.46 mm |
| + work phone and address | 289 | 13 (69 x 69) | 0.32 mm | 0.39 mm |
| + a 60 character note | 352 | 14 (73 x 73) | 0.31 mm | 0.37 mm |
Modules under about 0.4 mm get hard for older phones. If yours land there, print the code larger or drop the address and note.
Which fields phones pick up
We write version 3.0 of the vCard format (RFC 2426), the version phones and email apps have read the longest. Each line is one property: N and FN for the name, ORG and TITLE for the company and role, TEL for phone numbers marked as mobile or work, EMAIL, URL for the website, ADR for the postal address and NOTE for a short message. Commas and semicolons inside a value are escaped so they do not split it.
Phone numbers are saved without spaces or brackets. Write them with a plus sign and the country code, such as +1 212 555 0123, so the contact can be dialed from abroad.
Questions
What is a vCard QR code?
A QR code that holds a contact card in the vCard format. Scanning it shows the name and details and offers to add them to the phone’s contacts, with no link or app in between.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. Current iPhone and Android cameras recognize contact cards in QR codes and offer to save them. Test with your own phone before you print a batch of cards.
Can I add a photo to the contact?
No. Even a small photo is several kilobytes, more than a QR code a phone can read comfortably. You can put your logo in the middle of the code instead, on the QR code with logo page.
Can I update my details later?
Not in a printed code: the details are inside it. Make a new code when your number or job changes.
Why vCard 3.0 and not 4.0?
Version 3.0 is read by the widest range of phones and apps. Version 4.0 (RFC 6350) adds little that matters for a business card.
Why does my code look so busy?
Each field adds data. Remove the address or note, or shorten the website to its home page, and the code gets simpler and easier to scan.
Are my contact details stored anywhere?
No. The card is built in your browser and nothing is uploaded to uncrop.si.
