Compress an image to 10 KB

Ten kilobytes holds a small photo or a signature, not a big one. Pick the pixel size your form names and the tool finds the best quality that still fits under 10 KB.

How to compress image to 10 KB

  1. Choose the photo or signature

Crop it close first. At 10 KB, every pixel of background costs detail.

  2. Keep 10 KB as the limit

If the form says 10 to 20 KB instead, tap that chip: 10 KB is then the minimum, not the maximum.

  3. Pick a small pixel size

    Tap 150 x 200 or 200 x 230 for a photo, 140 x 60 for a signature, or type the size your form gives.

  4. Save it and check it

Download the JPG, then drop it into Check my file to see its size both ways a site may count it.

What fits in 10 KB

We fitted two test photos into 10 KB at the pixel sizes forms often ask for, and noted the JPEG quality the tool reached. Higher is cleaner.

Our test photos: a 1,920 x 1,280 street scene full of detail, and a 960 x 1,280 portrait with a soft, blurred background. Quality is the JPEG quality the tool settled on, out of 100. Sizes count 1 KB as 1,000 bytes, as the tool does.
Pixel sizeBusy street photoPortrait, soft background
150 x 200Quality 82Quality 95, 9.8 KB
200 x 230Quality 62Quality 90
200 x 250Quality 57Quality 89
300 x 375Quality 19, visibly blockyQuality 67
Keep or shrink (tool picks)242 x 161, quality 70330 x 440, quality 56

Side by side, the street photo at quality 19 showed square blocks plainly, while from about 50 up we had to zoom in to see any difference. So for a busy photo, 200 x 230 is about the largest size that stays clean in 10 KB. A plain background leaves far more room.

Signatures fit with room to spare

A signature is mostly white paper, so it needs very few bytes. Our test signature came to 3 KB at 140 x 60 pixels and 6 to 7 KB at 300 x 80, both at quality 95. Getting under 10 KB is never the problem with a signature. Staying above a minimum is.

When 10 KB is the minimum, not the limit

In the official instructions we checked, 10 KB turns up more often as the lowest size allowed than as the highest. MSTC and Punjab & Sind Bank ask for a signature of 10 to 20 KB at 140 x 60 pixels, NIOT wants a signature over 10 KB and up to 20 KB, J&K BOPEE accepts photos and signatures from 10 to 50 KB, and India’s regular online visa form takes photos from 10 to 300 KB, while its e-Visa portal takes 10 KB to 1 MB.

That creates a trap. At 140 x 60 our signature reached only 6.7 KB even at full quality, so it cannot pass a 10 KB minimum at that size. Both forms call 140 x 60 "preferred", so a slightly larger size is the honest fix: at 315 x 157 pixels (4 x 2 cm at 200 DPI), with 10 to 20 KB set, the tool lifted the same signature to 11.5 KB at quality 96, just over the minimum. The tool never pads a file with empty bytes to fake a size.

Questions

How do I reduce the size of a JPEG to 10 KB?

Choose the JPEG, keep 10 KB as the limit, set the pixel size your form asks for and download. The tool tries the highest quality first and lowers it only as far as 10 KB needs.

Can I compress an image to 10 KB without losing quality?

Not a large photo: 10 KB is a tiny fraction of a phone photo, which is often a few megabytes. What you can avoid is visible loss. In our tests a portrait at 150 x 200 pixels fitted at quality 95, where losses are hard to see. Keep the pixel size small and the quality stays high.

Is 10 KB a big file?

No, it is very small: 10,000 bytes, or 10,240 if a site counts in 1,024s. A phone photo is usually a few hundred times larger. It is enough for a small face photo or a signature.

How do I compress an image to between 10 KB and 20 KB?

Tap the 10 to 20 KB chip, or type 10 in Min and 20 in Max. The file then stays above 10,240 bytes and below 20,000, so it passes however the site counts. For signatures, the signature resizer also whitens the paper.

Why is my file below 10 KB even at full quality?

The image has too few pixels to fill 10 KB. Choose a larger pixel size if your form allows one. Our 140 x 60 test signature topped out at 6.7 KB, while the same signature at 315 x 157 passed 10 KB.

What size photo fits in 10 KB?

About 150 x 200 to 200 x 230 pixels for a detailed photo. A portrait with a plain or soft background can go larger: ours fitted at 300 x 375 with quality 67.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The image is resized and compressed by your browser, on your device, and never sent to uncrop.si.
