Get a JPG below 30 KB for application forms that cap a photo or signature there. Thirty kilobytes keeps a passport-style photo crisp at the sizes forms use.

How to compress image to 30 KB

  1. Choose the photo or signature

From your phone, a scanner or a screenshot. Up to 30 at once.

  2. Keep 30 KB as the limit

For a range such as 4 to 30 KB, tap that chip so the file stays above the minimum too.

  3. Set the size the form gives

    Tap 150 x 200 for a photo or 150 x 100 for a signature, or type your own.

  4. Download the JPG

Its name ends with the size in KB. Check my file shows the size, pixels and DPI side by side.

Forms that cap files at 30 KB

A 30 KB cap usually comes with a small pixel size. Three examples from official pages we checked:

  • ARIES, Nainital (recruitment): photo and signature each up to 30 KB, the photo at 150 x 200 pixels and the signature at 150 x 100.
  • Government of Puducherry recruitment: signature up to 30 KB and photo up to 50 KB.
  • JNU admissions: signature from 4 KB to 30 KB, photo from 10 KB to 200 KB.

Rules change between notices, so read the one for your own application before you upload.

Pixel sizes for 30 KB, measured

We fitted two test photos into 30 KB at four sizes and noted the quality the tool reached:

Our test photos: a 1,920 x 1,280 street scene full of detail, and a 960 x 1,280 portrait with a soft, blurred background. Quality is the JPEG quality the tool settled on, out of 100. Sizes count 1 KB as 1,000 bytes, as the tool does.
Pixel sizeBusy street photoPortrait, soft background
150 x 200Quality 95, 18.3 KBQuality 95, 9.8 KB
300 x 375Quality 76Quality 94
350 x 450Quality 57Quality 91
413 x 531Quality 36Quality 86
Keep or shrink (tool picks)461 x 307, quality 66576 x 768, quality 67

So the 150 x 200 photo that ARIES asks for needs no real squeezing: even the busy street scene came to 18.3 KB at the top quality setting. The size that strains 30 KB is a 35 x 45 mm photo at 300 DPI (413 x 531 pixels), where a busy background drops the quality to 36.

A signature in 30 KB

Our test signature at 150 x 100 pixels came to 4.3 to 4.7 KB at quality 95, so 30 KB is far more than it needs. It also clears a 4 KB minimum like the one JNU sets, but only just. A smaller or cleaner signature could fall below it, so enter the minimum in the tool: it then raises the quality to stay above it, or tells you which larger size would.

Questions

How do I reduce a photo below 30 KB?

Choose the photo, keep 30 KB as the limit and download. Set Exact size first if the form names a pixel size; otherwise the tool picks one that keeps the quality up.

How do I reduce a passport photo to 30 KB?

Crop it to the passport shape first, for example with the passport photo maker, then set 30 KB here. A 35 x 45 mm photo at 300 DPI (413 x 531 pixels) fitted at quality 86 in our test with a soft background, so it stays sharp.

Can I compress to 30 KB without losing quality?

At small pixel sizes, yes. A 150 x 200 photo fitted under 30 KB at the top quality setting in our tests, so the tool had nothing to give up.

How do I get a file between 30 KB and 40 KB?

Type 30 in Min and 40 in Max. The tool keeps the file above 30,720 bytes and under 40,000, raising the quality if the image would be too small, or suggesting a larger pixel size when even full quality is not enough.

What pixel size should a 30 KB photo be?

Up to about 300 x 375 for a busy photo, which kept quality 76 in our test, and up to 413 x 531 for a portrait on a plain or soft background, which kept quality 86.

Is 30 KB enough for a signature?

Yes, many times over. Our 150 x 100 test signature needed under 5 KB.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The photo is compressed in your browser and never leaves your device.
