Compress an image to 40 KB

Bring a photo under 40 KB with as much detail as that allows. Forty kilobytes holds a sharp 35 x 45 mm photo at 300 DPI, a size many forms work from.

How to compress image to 40 KB

  1. Add your photo

A full-size phone photo is fine. It is scaled down only as far as 40 KB needs.

  2. Keep 40 KB as the limit

Or tap a range: 30 to 40 KB, or 40 to 300 KB for a scan that must be at least 40 KB.

  3. Pick a pixel size, or let the tool

    413 x 531 and 276 x 354 are 35 x 45 mm at 300 and 200 DPI. Leave Keep or shrink on if no size is given.

  4. Save it, then check it

Drop the download into Check my file to confirm it is under 40 KB both ways a site might count.

Photo sizes that fit 40 KB

Here is the quality the tool reached when we fitted two test photos into 40 KB:

Our test photos: a 1,920 x 1,280 street scene full of detail, and a 960 x 1,280 portrait with a soft, blurred background. Quality is the JPEG quality the tool settled on, out of 100. Sizes count 1 KB as 1,000 bytes, as the tool does.
Pixel sizeBusy street photoPortrait, soft background
276 x 354 (3.5 x 4.5 cm at 200 DPI)Quality 89Quality 95, 26.4 KB
400 x 500Quality 62Quality 92
413 x 531 (35 x 45 mm at 300 DPI)Quality 56Quality 91
Keep or shrink (tool picks)576 x 384, quality 58682 x 910, quality 65

A passport-shaped photo at 300 DPI fits 40 KB with room to spare when the background is plain or soft. A busy background is what costs quality, so stand in front of a plain wall.

Is 40 KB a real form limit?

As a minimum, yes: Arunachal Pradesh PSC asks for scanned documents of 40 to 300 KB in its one time registration, so a scan must be at least 40 KB. As a maximum it is rare in the official rules we checked, which mostly use 10, 20, 30, 50, 100 and 500 KB. For a range, type both numbers, or tap 40 to 300 KB, and the tool keeps the file between them.

If your form says 50 KB, you do not need to aim lower to be safe. The tool already keeps the file under 50,000 bytes, which passes whichever way the site counts. Aim for 40 KB when the form says 40, or when you will add something to the image afterwards, such as your name and the date.

Centimetres and DPI at 40 KB

Many forms describe the photo as 3.5 x 4.5 cm rather than in pixels; the SSC CHSL 2022 notice and J&K BOPEE both do. Choose Exact size, switch to cm and set the DPI. At 200 DPI that is 276 x 354 pixels, which our busy street photo filled at quality 89 within 40 KB. The cm and KB page lists more of these conversions.

Questions

How do I compress an image to 40 KB online?

Choose the image here, keep 40 KB and download. It runs in your browser, so the image is never sent to a server.

Can I compress to 40 KB without losing quality?

With a sensible pixel size, the loss is hard to see: our portrait at 413 x 531 fitted at quality 91. A whole phone photo at full size cannot fit 40 KB without heavy loss, so let the tool reduce the pixels.

What is the best pixel size for a 40 KB photo?

Around 400 x 500. In our tests a busy photo kept quality 62 there and a soft-background portrait 92.

How do I compress a JPEG to 40 KB on my phone?

Open this page in your phone browser, tap Choose images, pick the photo and tap Download. No app is needed.

Is 40 KB the same as 0.04 MB?

Yes, when 1 MB is 1,000 KB. The tool keeps the file under 40,000 bytes, which passes a 40 KB limit counted either way.

Why is my file 38 KB and not exactly 40 KB?

The tool aims under the limit in both ways sites count a kilobyte, and JPEG quality moves in steps, so a file a little under 40 KB is normal. If the form also sets a minimum, enter it and the file stays above that too.

Is my image uploaded?

No. Your browser does the work, and the photo stays on your device.
