Compress an image to 500 KB

Get a photo under half a megabyte with almost no visible loss. The tool keeps every pixel of a photo up to 16 megapixels whenever quality alone can reach 500 KB. When a site sets 500 KB as the minimum, it raises the quality to get there, or tells you the pixel size that would.

How to compress image to 500 KB

  1. Add the photos

Straight from a phone or camera, or scans. Up to 30 at a time.

  2. Keep 500 KB as the limit

For a site that wants at least 500 KB, tap 500 KB to 3 MB instead.

  3. Leave Keep or shrink on

The photo keeps its pixels when quality alone is enough. Choose Exact size only if the site names one.

  4. Download one or all

Each file gets its own button, and Download all makes a zip.

How much photo fits in 500 KB

More than people expect. Our 1,920 x 1,280 street photo, full of fine detail, fitted under 500 KB at its full size with quality 67. Saved at fixed qualities, the same scene came to:

Our 1,920 x 1,280 street photo saved as JPG at two quality levels, 13 October 2026. 1 KB is 1,000 bytes here, as in the tool.
Pixel sizeQuality 80Quality 95
1280 x 853306 KB591 KB
1600 x 1067443 KB863 KB
1920 x 1280729 KB1,058 KB

So at good quality, 500 KB holds a busy photo of about 1,600 pixels on the long side, which fills a laptop screen. Calmer scenes keep more: our 960 x 1,280 portrait needed only 305 KB at quality 95.

When 500 KB is the minimum

Some sites want large files. Immigration New Zealand asks for a visa photo saved as JPEG, between 500 KB and 3 MB, and between 900 x 1200 and 2250 x 3000 pixels.

That is harder than it sounds with a smooth background. Our portrait at exactly 900 x 1200 came to only 253 KB at quality 95, so the tool saved it at quality 100 to pass 500 KB, which gave 682 KB. The busy street scene at the same size passed at quality 95 with 551 KB. If a photo still falls short at full quality, use a larger pixel size inside the allowed range rather than a padded file.

Tap the 500 KB to 3 MB chip. With Keep or shrink on, the tool never enlarges a photo: if it cannot reach 500 KB at its own size, the result line suggests a pixel size that would. A blurred copy of our portrait needed about 1,448 x 1,930. If the suggestion is inside the 900 x 1200 to 2250 x 3000 that Immigration New Zealand allows, tap Use to apply it as an exact size.

Documents and scans at 500 KB

Forms that take certificates often cap each one at 500 KB, usually as a PDF. MSTC, for example, asks for caste or disability certificates as PDFs of 100 to 500 KB. A phone photo of a printed page fits easily: compress it here, or make the PDF directly with JPG to PDF under 500 KB.

Questions

How much is 500 KB in MB?

Half a megabyte: 0.5 MB when 1 MB is 1,000 KB, or about 0.49 MB when a site counts 1,024 KB to the megabyte. The tool keeps the file under 500,000 bytes, which passes both.

How do I reduce a picture to 500 KB on an iPhone?

Open this page in Safari, tap Choose images, pick the photo and tap Download. It works without an app, and the photo is processed on the phone.

Can I compress to 500 KB without losing quality?

Without visible loss, usually yes. Our detailed 1,920 x 1,280 photo fitted at quality 67 at its full size, and calmer photos fit at higher quality. An exact copy of a large photo is not possible at 500 KB, because JPEG always drops some detail.

Can I compress a PNG to 500 KB?

Yes. Drop the PNG and the tool saves it as a JPG under 500 KB, with any transparent areas filled white. Photos rarely get that small as PNG, because PNG keeps every pixel exactly: our 300 x 375 portrait was 209 KB as a PNG against 13 KB as a JPG.

Can I make a PDF under 500 KB?

Yes, with JPG to PDF under 500 KB, which fits several photos or scanned pages into one PDF.

Will my photo be resized?

Only if quality alone cannot reach 500 KB without dropping too low, or if it is over 16 megapixels, which is scaled to 16 megapixels first. In our tests a 1,920 x 1,280 photo kept its full size. A bigger phone photo is reduced step by step, and the result line says so and gives the original size.

Is my image uploaded?

No. Your browser compresses it on your device. Nothing is sent to uncrop.si.
