25 MB video compressor
Compress a video to 25 MB
A personal Gmail account, Outlook.com and Yahoo Mail all stop at 25 MB. Drop a video, keep 25 MB or go a little lower to leave room for the rest of the email, and download an MP4 that was measured to fit. The video stays on your phone or computer.
- Starts at 25 MB
- Presets for 20 and 23 MB
- No upload, account or watermark
Compress only part of the video
Type a time like 1:05.5 or 65.5, drag the handles, or play the video and use the current position.
Keep this tab open until it finishes.
How to compress a video to 25 MB
Add the video
Drop it on the box or choose it from your photos or folders. A 4K or 60 fps phone video is fine.
Pick 25, 23 or 20 MB
25 MB uses the whole allowance. Take 23 if the email will carry other files or pictures, or 20 for classic Outlook on Windows.
Check the picture size
The panel shows what Auto chose for this length, such as 720p for a two-minute video. You can pick another size or keep only part.
Compress and attach
Press Compress the video and wait for the line confirming it is under your size. Download it, then attach it to the email.
Want help with the email itself, or a tighter limit? Compress a video for email or Compress a video to 10 MB.
Who stops at 25 MB, and what they count
Several big email services share the 25 MB figure, but they do not all add up the same parts of a message:
| Service | Limit | What counts toward it |
|---|---|---|
| Gmail, personal account | 25 MB | Every attachment in the email together; above that, Gmail swaps them for a Google Drive link |
| Outlook.com | 25 MB | The whole email: its text, pictures placed in it and attachments; OneDrive links do not count |
| Yahoo Mail | 25 MB | All the files attached to one message, sent or received |
| Proton Mail | 25 MB to send, 50 MB to receive | All attachments, which encoding makes a bit larger than on your device |
| Classic Outlook for Windows, IMAP or POP account | 20 MB by default | All attachments together; Outlook itself refuses more |
Each limit links to the service's own help page. Work and school Gmail accounts have limits their administrator sets, and so do Exchange mailboxes, where classic Outlook's default is 10 MB (see compress a video to 10 MB).
How much video fits in 25 MB
The longer the video, the fewer bits each second gets, so Auto lowers the picture size as the length grows. For a 1080p phone video at 30 frames per second with AAC sound, this is what you get:
| Length | Picture | Video bitrate | Sound |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 seconds | 1920 x 1080 | 6.3 Mbps | Copied as it is |
| 45 seconds | 1920 x 1080 | 4.2 Mbps | Copied as it is |
| 1 minute | 1280 x 720 | 3.1 Mbps | Copied as it is |
| 2 minutes | 1280 x 720 | 1.5 Mbps | Copied as it is |
| 3 minutes | 960 x 540 | 0.94 Mbps | Copied as it is |
| 5 minutes | 640 x 360 | 0.51 Mbps | Copied as it is |
| 10 minutes | 428 x 240 | 0.22 Mbps | AAC at 96 kbps |
| 15 minutes | 428 x 240 | 0.11 Mbps | AAC at 96 kbps; soft in fast motion |
Every row clears Auto's bar of about 0.05 bits per pixel in each frame, the point where a phone video still looks clean, except the last. A 4K video keeps 4K for about 15 seconds and 1440p up to about 30; from 45 seconds on it gets the same picture as a 1080p one. Past about 20 minutes with sound, 25 MB turns blocky, and the panel warns you before you start.
Aim under 25 when the email carries more
Outlook.com counts the words of the email and any picture placed in it as part of its 25 MB, and Gmail and Yahoo Mail add up every attachment. A video made to exactly 25 MB leaves no room for anything else, so tap 23 MB if you will add a signature image, a document or a long message.
Proton Mail warns that encoding makes attachments a bit larger than the files on your device. If it turns down a 25 MB video, compress the video again at 23 or 20 MB.
Classic Outlook for Windows has its own 20 MB default for IMAP and POP accounts, such as a Gmail address added to Outlook, whatever the email service itself allows. Its error says "The file you're attaching is bigger than the server allows" (Microsoft Learn). Choose 20 MB there.
4K, 60 fps and vertical phone videos
Phones record in 4K and at 60 frames per second, and that fills 25 MB within seconds. Auto copes with both: it tries 30 fps before it shrinks the picture, and it never makes a picture bigger than the original. A minute of 4K at 60 fps comes out at 720p, still at 60 fps; at a minute and a half it becomes 720p at 30 fps. In our tests, 10 seconds of 4K came out at 24.2 MB, still 3840 x 2160, in about 14 seconds.
Vertical videos keep their shape. A 1080 x 1920 phone video becomes 720 x 1280 at one minute, upright, with no black bars added at the sides.
iPhones can record in HEVC, the High Efficiency format (Apple). Such a video compresses here only where your browser can decode HEVC, and the tool checks that before anything starts. The 25 MB copy is always H.264 in an MP4.
Over 25 MB: share a link or split it
When the video has to stay long and sharp, a link works better than an attachment. Gmail moves attachments over its limit to Google Drive on its own (Gmail Help), and Outlook.com can attach a OneDrive file of up to 2 GB as a link, which does not count toward its 25 MB (Microsoft).
To keep it as an attachment, split the video into parts with the cut video tool, then compress each part to 25 MB here and send one email per part. Each part gets the full 25 MB, so a 4-minute video sent as two halves stays at 720p, where in one piece it would be 480p.
Questions
How do I compress a video to less than 25 MB?
Open the video here, leave the size at 25 MB and press Compress the video. The new file is measured before Download appears, so it is under 25 MB when you attach it.
Can a 1 GB video get under 25 MB?
Yes, unless it is very long: the starting size makes no difference, only the length and the picture do, and a long video simply gets a smaller picture. In our tests a one-minute 1080p file of 257 MB came out at 24.2 MB, still 720p, in 13 to 14 seconds.
Why is my 25 MB video still too big for the email?
The limit may count more than the video: Outlook.com counts the text and pictures of the email, Gmail and Yahoo Mail count every attachment, and classic Outlook for Windows stops at 20 MB. Compress it again at 23 or 20 MB.
How long can a video be at 25 MB?
With the sound at 128 kbps: just under a minute at 1080p, about 2 minutes at 720p, 4 minutes at 480p and about 7 minutes at 360p, where Auto lowers the sound to 96 kbps. Remove the sound and a full minute stays at 1080p.
Will a 25 MB video upload to Discord?
Not without Nitro: Discord's free limit is 20 MB, while Nitro Basic takes 50 MB. The Discord page here starts at 20 MB.
Does my video have to be an MP4 first?
No. MOV, WebM and MKV open too, and the 25 MB result is always an MP4 with H.264 video, whatever went in.
Is anything sent to a server?
No. The browser on your phone or computer reads, compresses and saves the video. The only thing it downloads is the video engine, once.
