Pixelate an image, part or all of it

Drag a box over a face, a number plate or a name, let us find the faces for you, or pixelate the whole picture. Choose how many blocks, add grid lines if you like, and download.

How to pixelate part of an image

  1. Open the image

Drop a photo, a screenshot or a drawing, or several at once.

  2. Choose what to pixelate

Drag a box over each area, tap Find faces to box every face, or tap Whole photo.

  3. Set the blocks

Fewer blocks hide more, more blocks keep more of the shape. Tick grid lines for a mosaic look.

  4. Download

Save the image, or every image in one zip file.

How many blocks to use

The slider sets how many blocks go across each box, so a face at the back gets as many blocks as one at the front, and a big box gets bigger blocks. In our test on a group photo:

Blocks acrossWhat we could still seeGood for
6A few squares of skin and hair colorA heavy censor for faces
10 (the start)Skin tone, hair, the shape of the head and a hint of a smileFaces in group, street and school photos
16Glasses, a beard and the smileA light censor, where it is fine to guess the face
24 to 64, whole pictureThe scene as large squares of colorA mosaic or pixel art look

Fewer blocks hide more from people who do not know the person, but they do not stop a computer that already has photos of them. In a 2016 study, faces pixelated down to about 6 by 7 blocks were still matched to the right person more than 95% of the time, out of 40 people the network had been trained on (McPherson and others). If that matters, cover the face with a solid box instead.

Pixelating text, numbers and number plates

Pixelated text can often be guessed back. Letters in a known font make predictable blocks, so a program can pixelate one guess after another until the blocks match. In 2022 the security firm Bishop Fox released a tool that did this, recovered the pixelated text in a public challenge image, and advised covering text with black bars instead (Bishop Fox).

So for a name, an address, an account or card number, a ticket code or a number plate, choose Solid box in the same tool. It fills the box with one color, and nothing of what was under it is left in the saved file.

Pixel art and grid lines from a whole picture

Tap Whole photo to pixelate everything, then set 24 to 64 blocks across for a mosaic look. Tick Show grid lines to outline every block, which makes it easier to copy a picture square by square onto grid paper, into a game's pixel editor or into a bead or stitch pattern.

Every block takes the average color of the pixels under it. The saved picture keeps its width and height up to 16 megapixels (a bigger picture is saved at 16 megapixels, and the tool tells you), so each block is many pixels wide, and the file is a fresh copy without the original's hidden details, such as where a photo was taken.

Questions

How do I pixelate part of an image?

Open the image here and drag a box over the part you want to hide. Add as many boxes as you need, then download. Tap a box to switch it off again.

How do I pixelate a face in a photo?

Tap Find faces. Every face the tool finds gets a box; check them, drag a box over any face it missed, and download. The faces are found on your device.

Can I pixelate an image with a grid?

Yes. Choose Pixelate and tick Show grid lines between blocks. The lines are drawn into the saved image wherever each block is at least 4 pixels wide, so use fewer blocks on a small area if the grid does not show.

Can I pixelate the whole image?

Yes. Tap Whole photo, then move the slider: about 24 to 64 blocks across gives a pixel art look.

Can a pixelated image be turned back into HD?

No. Each block keeps only the average color of the pixels it replaced, so the detail is gone. Apps that promise to unpixelate draw a new guess, which can look sharp and still be wrong.

What does pixelate mean?

To pixelate is to turn part of a picture into large squares of single colors, so the detail can no longer be seen. It is also called a mosaic.

Is pixelation safe for hiding text or a number plate?

No. Pixelated text can be guessed back by trying letters until the blocks match. Use Solid box for anything written.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The image is pixelated by your browser on your device. If you tap Find faces, the face finder is downloaded once from uncrop.si; the image itself never leaves the page.
