Free audio remover, on your device

Mute a video, with the sound taken out of the file

Choose a video and save a copy with no sound track at all. The picture is copied exactly as it is, so the quality stays the same, and the file gets a little smaller.

How to remove the sound from a video

  1. Choose the video

Tap Choose a video, or drop it on the box. The line above the player says whether it has a sound track.

  2. Keep the whole video, or a part

Leave Keep only part of the video closed to keep everything, or open it to set a start and end.

  3. Remove the sound

Press Remove the sound. The picture is copied as it is, and the sound track is left out.

  4. Download the silent video

Press Download. Play it once to hear that it is silent before you share it.

Want to keep the sound but shorten the video, or keep only the sound? Cut a video or Video to MP3.

Muted is not the same as silent

A mute button in a video player only stops that player from playing the sound. On a web page, for example, muted is a setting of the video player element, not of the video file (MDN). The sound is still in the video, and anyone you send it to can turn it back on. The same is true of turning the volume down.

This tool writes a new file without the sound track at all. There is no sound in it to turn back on, so the background talk, names, music or noise in the original cannot be heard from the copy.

What changes in the file, and what stays

The picture is copied piece by piece, without being decoded or encoded again, so it looks exactly like the original. Only the sound track and the metadata are left out.

How much smaller the file gets

Removing the sound saves the space the sound took. That depends on its bitrate, which the tool shows when you open the video:

Sound bitrateSaved on a 10 minute videoSaved on an hour of video
64 kbps4.8 MB28.8 MB
96 kbps7.2 MB43.2 MB
128 kbps9.6 MB57.6 MB
160 kbps12.0 MB72.0 MB
256 kbps19.2 MB115.2 MB

The picture usually takes far more space than the sound, so a muted video is only a little smaller. In our test, taking the 128 kbps sound out of a 20 second 1080p clip shrank it from 22.2 MB to 21.8 MB. To make a video much smaller, it has to be re-encoded at a lower bitrate.

The whole video, or only a part

By default the whole video is kept, without its sound. To also shorten it, open Keep only part of the video and set a start and end. That part is copied the same way, so it begins on a keyframe, a frame stored in full (MDN); the tool shows where the part really starts before you save.

This tool removes the sound from the whole part you keep. Silencing only a few seconds in the middle while keeping the rest of the sound is not something it does.

iPhone videos and other formats

Since the iPhone 7, iPhones can record video in HEVC (H.265), the High Efficiency format; set to Most Compatible, they record H.264 instead (Apple). Not every browser can show HEVC; in our tests on a Windows laptop, Edge could not. Removing the sound does not need to show it: the picture is copied, not decoded, so the silent copy is made anyway. The preview may then play only the sound, and the tool tells you why.

Everything runs in your browser. The silent copy is made on your phone or computer, and the original video is left as it was.

Questions

How do I remove the sound from a video?

Choose the video here and press Remove the sound, then Download. The new video has no sound track at all, and the picture is unchanged.

Can the sound be turned back on?

No. Muting in a player can be undone because the sound is still in the file. This tool leaves the sound track out of the new file, so there is nothing to turn back on.

Does removing the sound lower the video quality?

No. The picture is copied without re-encoding, so it is exactly the same as in the original.

Will the muted video be much smaller?

A little. Sound at 128 kbps takes under 1 MB per minute, while the picture usually takes much more. The tool shows the size before you save.

Can I remove the sound from only part of the video?

The tool removes the sound from everything you keep. You can keep only a part of the video, but not silence a few seconds and keep the sound elsewhere.

Does it work with iPhone videos?

Yes. It opens iPhone videos in HEVC or H.264 (Apple) and saves an MP4 without sound. It copies the picture, so it works even where the browser cannot show HEVC.

Does the video have to be uploaded to remove its audio?

No. Your browser reads the video and writes the silent copy on your device, so the video is never sent to uncrop.si or anyone else.
